On 2nd October, just before World Animal Day, an extraordinary book appears:
Carnivoria
with original recipes by Janneke Vreugdenhil
with fairytale photography by Mayke Swemle
with exciting (typo)graphic design by Mark van Wageningen
We are what we eat. But do we really know what we eat? And therefore do we know who we are? The makers of Carnivoria pose questions, on factory farming, on environmental pollution, on food miles and on overfishing. Questions, however, with no ready made answers. One who eats food in the 21st century is guilty by definition.
Eels for example face extinction. What to do? Enjoy it while we still can – gently stewed with herbs and white wine – or leave it alone? And beetles – why don’t we eat more of them? Delicious when fried and served with a chili sauce.
As stated, Carnivoria asks questions, but it does not deliver answers. Instead, the photographs by Mayke Swemle, the recipes by Janneke Vreugdenhil and the (typo)graphic design by Mark van Wageningen, appeal to your imagination: www.carnivoria.nl.
